Fairytale Castle of St Hilarion perched dizzily thousands of feet above the bay of Kyrenia, a clambering ruin which the Disney Studio took as it's inspiration for the castle in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Above Bellapais Abbey lived Lawrence Durrel, author of "Bitter Lemons". This ruined Monastery of Bellapais was one of the
loveliest Gothic survivals in the Levant. The square where Durrell wrote of locals playing cards and smoking under an
acacia tree called The Tree of Idleness as he called it is now full of restaurants and small shops. The tree is still there,
although it is dead.
